A townhouse renovation adjacent to Washington Square Park features six Interbau staircases.
The steady rhythm of blackened steel stringers and oak treads guides one’s journey from the basement to the newly-built penthouse.
Interbau worked closely with the architects of The Turett Collaborative to deliver a seamless encounter with urbanity. Centered between the wall and floor- to-ceiling glass, each staircase features treads and risers in distressed oak, a continuous line of wood both above and below.
Individual details accentuate the careful scrutiny exercised during the shop drawing phase: custom- made steel brackets and angled joints complement the oak handrail; staircase illumination dramatizes the sawtooth pattern of the stringer from an integrated channel; blackened steel brake metal clads the deck edges, mending the gap between pieces of glass.
The entire townhouse reflects contemporary opulence. At first glance some elements appear simple; upon closer inspection, each particular displays reflection and refinement. Interbau emphasized that aesthetic, equipping the dwelling with staircases worthy of the approach.
